Hope In Chaos (3/15/2020)

As we look at the chaos surrounding us here in the United States and around the world, we can’t help but ask questions about the current situation we are in.

Why is this happening? Couldn’t this have been taken care of already? It can’t be this bad, can it?

Amidst searching for answers, we are struggling with the reality that our world isn’t what it was just a few weeks ago (for some-just a few days ago). As we try to find someone to blame, we know the questions behind the scenes are introspective. For some of us we blow off this situation assuming “it will never be me”, “it will only hurt the elderly-I’m still young”, or even “my immune system is in good shape”. Others of us are concerned for our older family members, friends, and loved ones whether anything devastating could happen to them with this virus. The problem with all these assumptions is the vanity behind our reasoning-it is as if we are the masters of our own fate, and we want to leave this world on our own terms.

There’s a verse in the Bible many of us (Christians and non-Christians) ignore tucked away in James that tells us plainly,

“You don’t even know what tomorrow will bring—what your life will be! For you are like smoke that appears for a little while, then vanishes.”

It is in moments of chaos like this, that you and I must realize there is hope to be found in Jesus Christ. An early Christ-denying, later-turned-apostle Peter penned these words of encouragement for us:

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you…

You and I may mock and ridicule, or be in fear for the future, but eventually we all must face the certainty of death. We should not delay in repenting of sin (changing our mind about sin and realizing we are guilty before a Holy God), as we don’t know whether we have a tomorrow.

Stop trusting in yourself-start trusting in the finished work of Christ. He paid for your sins entirely on the cross-there is nothing left for you to do but ask Him to cover your sin. You are guilty but you can be declared innocent if you only put your faith in Jesus Christ (the resurrected Savior). He has an inheritance waiting for His children!

        THERE IS HOPE IN CHAOS!
